6 Tips for Fantasy Authors

Fantasy is a challenging genre to write, as authors must use imagination to create new worlds. This is the hallmark of good fantasy. How can authors strike a good balance between over-the-top worldbuilding and details that are too subtle to notice?

🌍⚒️🪬Tip #1: Worldbuilding is more interesting when there are limitations.

A world with no conflict has no stakes. What is rare in your fantasy world? Imagine if there’s a shortage of dragon eggs, an object that is traded alongside phases of the moon, or knowledge must be acquired before using skills. What are the constraints of your magic system?

🔮🧿🗝️Tip #2: Each chapter needs to be important.

Your story needs each chapter; fit them together like a puzzle. Each subsequent chapter builds on all that comes before it. If a chapter does not contribute to later chapters, then it does not belong.

🍄🌸💌Tip #3: Use actions to build the world.

Do not describe the grooves in a sword, describe the blacksmith forging it. Do not explicitly state information, create mystery around it. Does your character read ancient runes or recieve a mysterious letter?

🌗🪐🪞Tip #4: Create mood in each scene.

Fantasy readers want to feel like they are stepping into an imaginary realm. How can readers sense that a forest is haunted? Engage their senses. Describe how a dragon egg is hot to the touch. Describe cool wind whizzing by the protagonist as he rides a pegasus.

🌛🥀🍀Tip #5: Write when you’re inspired.

Cultivate a writing habit that engages your senses. Maybe light a candle or peel an orange to set the mood. Step into a creative flow. Do not force yourself to write, instead relax into a state of creativity.

🦋🦄🌜Tip #6: Draw from your own experiences.

I know it may seem impossible to infuse a fantasy narrative with details from reality, but I promise it is a common tactic. For example, mant equestrians have written their experiences with horses into fantasy dragon riding. If you love to paint, put that into your worldbuilding. What if your protagonist uses shimmery watercolors made from mermaid scales? Write the book that only you could write.
